Tom still running strong after 30 years

Age is no barrier when it comes to Toukley resident, Tom Hobbs, who at 79 years of age will again be running the City2Surf as part of Team Bandaged Bear.

What began as a change of lifestyle to get fit and healthy, has since become an opportunity to make a difference, which is what keeps Tom coming back.

“Why do I keep coming back? The answer is simple, I love it! I love doing the City2Surf each year and I love giving back to the community,” Tom said.

“For me, doing the City2Surf means there are 2 winners; it keeps me fit and I get to support The Children’s Hospital at Westmead at the same time. It is a great feeling knowing that I am making a difference to the lives of sick children every year.

Come August 13, Tom will have participated in 30 City2Surf fun-runs; over 19 of those years were spent helping to raise more than $60,000 for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Bear Cottage.

This year, Tom will be running as one of Team Bandaged Bear’s ‘Gold Charity’ runners and hopes to raise well over $1,000 by race day.

“Years ago I decided that if I was going to run to keep fit, I might as well do it for a good cause and collect sponsorship each year and I have stayed true to that,” Tom said.

Official entry to the City2Surf is now open and Team Bandaged Bear is relying on community support to help raise $600,000 for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Bear Cottage.
