Occupational Therapy is an important part of allied health provided at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, but it’s a title not many people understand. One of the big misconceptions of Occupational Therapy is that people often think that children don’t have an ‘occupation’.
Jessica Bunworth is an Occupational Therapist at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and explains what her role entails and how she helps her patients.
“For children, their 'occupation' is within their childhood. Everything we do helps them work towards fulfilling an occupation of a child - whether it be player, a learner at school, a friend or participating in their daily routine. We promote participation and assist children in whatever level they are at," said Ms. Bunworth.
Jessica has been a part of the Occupational Therapy Department for the past three years but the last six months have been particularly challenging. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the Jessica and her colleagues have adapted to the 'new normal'. The processes within the department changed as well as moving to services like teleheath for patient appointments, maintaining physical distancing within the rooms and working from home rosters.
Despite the challenges, this hasn't stopped Jessica's immense passion for her job. Looking back at her years in the hospital, the moments she is most proud of are helping patients develop new skills and achieving those little gains along the way.
"Seeing the joy in a child and seeing the joy in a parent when they learn something that we didn’t think they were able to do, that is the most rewarding part of my job," said Ms. Bunworth.
Jessica and her department, Team Occupational Therapy, have signed up for City2Surf Virtual Run, held on Sunday 18 October, 2020. They will represent Team Bandaged Bear in the iconic race, in a bid to raise money for their department.
"The department has participated in City2Surf for the last 5 years so we look forward to it every year. I know I'll be encouraging my family members and my extended friendship groups across NSW to do City2Surf virtually with us. Every little bit counts and will make a huge difference!"
